Strengthening a partnership that is shaping the future of healthcare innovation in East Africa.

We recently had the privilege of sending a delegation to Stanford Biodesign, one of the world’s foremost centres for health technology innovation, for a visit that was as strategic as it was inspiring.

Our delegation was led by Professor Waceke Wanjohi, Deputy Vice Chancellor at Kenyatta University, and included Dr. Fidelis Kilonzo, Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture; Dr. June Madete, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering; and Dr. Gladys Wangechi Mwangi, Lecturer in Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy. Together, they represented the depth and breadth of expertise that continues to drive the MedTech Accelerator’s mission forward.

The visit centred on strategic planning for the East Africa Biodesign (EAB) programme, a collaboration we are proud to share with the University of Global Health Equity and the University of Rwanda. Discussions touched on the progress of EAB teams, the contextual realities of applying the biodesign methodology in Kenya, and forward-looking conversations on digital health innovation, commercialisation, and long-term sustainability.

Our delegation also had the opportunity to connect with Professor Michele Barry, Director of the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, as well as the team at Fogarty Innovation, engagements that further strengthen the global network supporting our work here in Nairobi.

With the Class of 2025, our first cohort of Kenya-based fellows, having recently graduated, this visit came at a pivotal moment: one that reaffirmed our shared commitment to building a generation of innovators equipped to transform African healthcare from the inside out.
